Montpellier Earthenware, Mid-20 Th Century. Pilgrim's Gourd

Montpellier faience is famous for its vibrant yellow backgrounds scattered with floral motifs. This piece is unusual; inspired by the tradition of pilgrim flasks commonly made in the 17th century, it innovates by adopting the shape of the symbol of Saint James, the eponymous scallop shell. It was intended to accompany the traveler on the Camino de Santiago. Beautifully crafted, with a spout and two holes for a harness, it appears never to have been used, as it is in perfect condition. However, the dryness of the raw faience in the mouth suggests that it is an old piece, likely dating from the mid-20th century.
