Egyptomania 19th Century. Pair Of Candlesticks
Fascination with ancient Egyptian civilization was at its height in the first half of the 19th century, triggered by Napoleon's campaigns, Champollion's deciphering of hieroglyphics, and the erection of the obelisk on the Place de la Concorde.
Patterns and figures invaded the decorative arts, creating a delightful mix of styles.
These small candlesticks from the Restoration period are in this vein, with oushebtis-style figures interspersed between a perfectly local binet and pedestal.
The priests have been deliberately given a slight patina, contrasting with the shiny parts.
A nut has been changed under one of the feet (it's invisible in place and can only be seen with difficulty when lifted).
In very good, stable condition.
