Pair Of Bronze Sculptures Signed By émile Guillemin – Musketeers – Red Cherry Marble – 19th Century
A charming pair of small 19th-century bronze sculptures depicting two elegant musketeers in Renaissance costumes, signed by Émile Guillemin (1841–1907), on the terrace.
Both figures strike expressive and theatrical poses, characteristic of the work of this sculptor, who is renowned for the finesse of his chiseling and the quality of his compositions. They rest on beautiful griotte red marble bases, offering an elegant contrast to the patina of the bronzes.
A student of his father, Auguste Guillemin, Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in the 1870s. His work is particularly prized for its Orientalist, historical, and allegorical subjects, as well as for his elegant genre figures cast by the leading Parisian foundries of the second half of the 19th century. Today, his sculptures are found in numerous public and private collections and remain highly sought after by collectors of art bronzes.
The bronzes now display an antique patina. They appear to have originally been silver-plated, though the silver plating has worn away over time, revealing the bronze’s natural color.
Please note: the swords and some of the scabbards are slightly warped and would benefit from a simple straightening. However, they are complete, sturdy, and unbroken.
A decorative pair of fine quality, ideal for a display case, a cabinet of curiosities, or a collection of 19th-century bronzes.
