19th-century Carved Walnut Neo-renaissance Frame With An 18th-century Engraving Based On A Work By Fragonard

A beautiful 18th-century engraving based on a work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, engraved by Jean-Henri Marchand, as indicated by the inscriptions in the margin (Fragonard pinx. and Marchand sculp.).

The composition, dedicated to the Count of La Tour d’Auvergne, depicts a romantic scene within an oval medallion surrounded by a rich floral garland, typical of the Rococo aesthetic of the late 18th century.

The work is set in a spectacular, finely carved 19th-century walnut frame, adorned with a large pediment decorated with attributes of the arts: a palette, paintbrushes, a tambourine, a female mascaron, flowers, and foliage. This frame, of exceptional craftsmanship, is in its own right a remarkable decorative piece.

The engraving shows some age spots. The frame retains its original patina and has a few imperfections and missing carvings visible in the photographs, without detracting from its character.
