Japanese-style Sellette Side Table In Carved Walnut, ø 50 Cm – Gabriel Viardot Style – 19th Century
An elegant Japanese-style pedestal table or stool in carved walnut, a French piece from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in the style of Gabriel Viardot’s prestigious works.
Resting on four richly carved, curved legs, this piece is distinguished by a fully openwork band decorated with Chinese-inspired motifs, embellished with four fantastical masks in patinated bronze. The legs are joined by an elegant, openwork crossbar featuring a circular patinated bronze grille at its center—a refined detail characteristic of the finest Japanese-style furniture of this period.
The circular top is set with antique marble in beautiful shades of pink, gray, and ivory, perfectly highlighted by finely crafted walnut molding.
With its design, the quality of its carving, and the richness of its ornamentation, this small armchair evokes the creations of Gabriel Viardot, a Parisian cabinetmaker renowned for his Far Eastern-inspired furniture in the late 19th century. Although not attributed to his workshop, it is fully in keeping with this decorative style, which is particularly sought after today.
The piece is in excellent condition with a lovely antique patina. A high-quality decorative piece, ideal both as an end table and as a display stool for a sculpture or bronze.
