15th-century Norman Medieval Floor Tile – From The Henri Cahingt Collection
Rare medieval terracotta floor tile with engobe decoration, a 15th-century Norman piece from Varengeville-sur-Mer (Seine-Maritime).
The decoration features an elegant six-petaled flower at its center, set within a network of interlaced motifs—a composition characteristic of medieval floor tiles intended for religious or seigneurial buildings of the late Middle Ages.
This piece has a particularly interesting provenance. It comes from the former personal collection of Henri Cahingt (1856–1943), a Norman historian, archaeologist, and scholar. His father had collaborated with Abbé Cochet on several excavations and archaeological research projects conducted in Normandy. Over the generations, the Cahingt family built up a significant collection of regional archaeological objects, notably medieval floor tiles, several of which were later donated to the Louvre Museum.
The tile is in generally good condition. It has an old break in two parts, now neatly re-glued. The decoration remains clearly legible and retains all its aesthetic quality.
Dimensions: 10.4 x 10.4 cm.
An authentic piece with a fine provenance that will appeal to both collectors of medieval archaeology and enthusiasts of Norman heritage.
