Medieval Italian Majolica Bowl - Upper Lazio, 14th-15th Century, Early Period
Medieval Italian majolica bowl - Upper Lazio, 14th-15th century, high period
Beautiful medieval Italian majolica bowl, attributable to workshops in Upper Lazio, north of Rome, and datable between the 14th and 15th centuries.
This piece, typical of archaic production in central Italy, features a rare figurative decoration at its center: a female bust finely drawn with a black line. The figure is wearing an elegant coronary headdress, embellished with a bun held in place by a net. The whole is enhanced by a green solid underlining the headdress and garment, typical of the palettes used in these workshops.
The marli is adorned with a rhythmic pattern of alternating black and green striations, reinforcing the graphic, sober aesthetic typical of these early productions.
This example comes from an old collection of a great Roman family, a guarantee of quality provenance.
The majolica is complete; it was formerly restored by re-gluing several shards, without adding material: all parts are original.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 13.8 cm
Height: 6 cm
An authentic piece evocative of early Italian majolica, sought-after for the quality of its decoration and its rare iconography.
