This delightful "View of the Roman Forum" (oil on canvas, 53.5 x 68 cm), a work of imaginative creativity freely inspired by the ruins of the Palatine Hill, featuring an open space with rural dwellings on the right, is an interesting example of Roman landscape painting from the height of the 18th century.
The work can be attributed to Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723–1790) based not only on the aforementioned compositional style but also on an analysis of the figurative style with which the “macchiette” animating this scene are executed: from the couple strolling on the left, to the children playing on a makeshift swing next to two farm carts, to the woman with a basket on her head, and to the tiny figures moving in the background.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Hendrik Frans van Lint (1684–1763), Giacomo earned a solid reputation as a landscape painter by depicting the city of Rome with topographical accuracy following his father’s example, while nevertheless expressing his own stylistic personality, devoting himself above all to the “veduta,” both realistic and imaginatively inspired, as in this painting.
The painter’s art is characterized by a luminous chromatic tone, with the sun’s glow gradually fading to infuse a delicate sense of chromatic tranquility.
These aspects were highly appreciated by foreign travelers on the Grand Tour, a fact that allows us to classify his work as a distinct genre—certainly landscape-oriented, but intended for those who desired a “souvenir”—which we would today call a memento—of the Eternal City.
The painter worked primarily for an audience from beyond the Alps, and his works were preserved in private European collections, particularly in England.
