A rich floral composition, arranged with a deliberate sense of spontaneity across two levels at different heights, where the two bouquets are arranged in large metal vases; some flowers seem to spill over from their vases and cascade to the ground, creating a composition distinguished by its elegant structure, combined with the freshness and brilliance of the colors.
The soft, nuanced application of color and the parallels with 17th-century Lombard painting allow us to attribute the work to the circle of the Milanese painter Francesca Volò Smiller, known as Vincenzina (Milan, 1657 –1700), a refined specialist in this genre and an important member of the largest and most prolific family of 17th-century Milanese painters.
The founder of this “family enterprise”—one of the highest caliber and equally successful—was her father, the Frenchman who became naturalized as an Italian, Vincenzo Volò, known as Vincenzino dei Fiori (1601–1671), who, in addition to Francesca, also employed her brother Giuseppe Volò (also nicknamed “Vicenzino”) and her sister Margherita Volò Caffi in his workshop.
Francesca’s painting is characterized by high technical quality and by her depiction of flowers through an intense and heartfelt naturalism, featuring predominantly bright, cool, and acidulous colors enlivened by touches of deep red and illuminated by the skillful use of white; Francesca arranges cut flowers or those in vases outdoors with great compositional freedom; their sparkling colors (primarily pink, white, and yellow) stand out against the dark background.
The canvas is in good condition.
