This pair of charming landscapes, executed with an elegant rocaille style and complete with pleasing decorative frames, are conceived with the scenic sensibility of the most classical Venetian landscape tradition of the early 18th century.

The works, of good painterly quality, show clear references to the stylistic traits of Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 – Venice 1730), one of the most important figures in Venetian landscape painting of this period.

The perspective composition, characterized by a succession of hills and rocky slopes—against a backdrop of mountains rendered in refined pale blue hues—is further enhanced by a harmonious interplay of light and shadow that creates a remarkable sense of depth. Among the innovations introduced by Ricci in landscape painting is his experimentation with light and its potential to convey atmosphere.

The works in question share many details with many of the master’s other paintings, such as the mountain ranges that fade into the background, the trees placed in the foreground to the side, as well as the small figures that enliven the scene, in addition to the compositional framing of the view, which expands into the depth in a modulated succession of perspectival planes.

After a stay in England and the Netherlands, where he gained firsthand knowledge of Northern European painting—particularly the works of Pieter Mulier and Jacob de Heusch—Ricci ventured into a new form of experimentation in the rendering of atmospheric light. This new approach to landscape painting blended with the style then in vogue in Venetian art, creating an unprecedented interpretation of landscape painting that was destined to enjoy extraordinary success and naturally inspired many painters close to him.

Our two works, created by an artist who must certainly have seen and studied Ricci’s compositions, are an excellent testament to this—a fascinating fusion of Venetian, Roman, and Flemish painting.
