This intriguing painting depicts a dynamic scene of armed combat between knights in armor, framed on the horizon by hills and a sky streaked with white clouds illuminated by flashes of light.
A ruined round tower, fortifications, and a thick column of smoke are visible, while in the foreground, on the left, a knight lies fallen to the ground with his banner, in the center, two duelists armed with pistols, and around them numerous men on horseback engaged in battle.
This is therefore a painting celebrating the exploits of a military campaign—though difficult to identify—that likely took place in the second half of the seventeenth century, as evidenced by the types of armor and the costumes of the combatants.
Both the composition and the stylistic qualities of the painting clearly point to the prestigious Neapolitan school of battle painters that flourished in the second half of the 17th century, highlighting its typical stylistic characteristics. In particular, the painting features a thick impasto of warm, rich colors; it is uniformly illuminated by a distinctive light that serves to round out the figures’ volumes and soften their forms; these hues and the pronounced facial features of the figures are effectively rendered with just a few brushstrokes.
This artistic movement was led by talented masters such as Salvator Rosa, Jacques Courtois (known as “il Borgognone”), and Marzio Masturzo. However, it is to the works of Francesco Graziani, known as “Ciccio Napoletano” (active in Rome and Naples during the second half of the 17th century), that our painting can most readily be linked, although the unique brilliance of the colors and the luminosity of the scene would allow the painting to hold its own alongside similar battle compositions by the previously mentioned artists.
Although reliable information regarding Francesco Graziani’s training (many sources report that he was a pupil of “il Borgognone”) and his subsequent career is scarce, it is known that in the final decades of the 17th century he moved from Naples to Rome, where he soon became a highly accomplished painter among the city’s patrons.
The overall character of the works displays that synthesis of rapid brushstrokes and vigorous emphasis perfectly attributable to Graziani’s style, who composes his scenes with crowded movements where the figures are outlined with a rapid and energetic stroke, almost curled, enlivened by effective touches of light.
