Pieter Mulier Called Cavalier Tempesta Callisto And Arcade The Birth Of The Ursa Major
Artist: Pieter Mulier
This wonderful framed canvas painting depicts the mythological episode of the birth of Ursa Major. Callisto, transformed into a bear by jealous Hera, is shot with an arrow by her hunter son Arcas, who does not recognize her. Zeus, moved by compassion, transforms them both into the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. This work is attributed by Professor G. Sestieri to the Dutch artist Pieter Mulier (1637-1701), who was active mainly in Italy and trained in Rome. Indeed, this painting can be dated to the Roman period. If you are interested in the painting, we can privately provide the expertise of Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, an expert on 17th and 18th century Roman art.
