Allegorical Portrait Of A Noblewoman — Austro-bohemian School, Late 17th Century
Oil on canvas from the Austro-Bohemian school, dating to circa 1670–1700, depicting a young noblewoman seated in a landscape, dressed in an antique rose gown with white puffed sleeves in the Louis XIV style. She holds a peach in her right hand while extending her left toward a stream of water flowing from a rocky outcrop, a personification of the Element of Water or Summer according to Central European Baroque iconographic tradition. At her feet, a basket of fruits and flowers completes the allegorical composition. In the background, a warm sunset illuminates the silhouette of a Baroque castle with cylindrical towers and onion-domed spires, architecture characteristic of the Austro-Hungarian region. The carved gilded wood frame is original to the period.
