An Old Portrait Of Ariosto
A bust-length portrait of Ariosto wearing a laurel wreath, painted on a parqueted wood panel. A yellow inscription at the top of the panel identifies the sitter and refers to his most famous work, Orlando Furioso, a seminal 17th-century work and the inspiration for numerous Baroque operas. The painting shows signs of old restoration and is covered with a varnish that has aged poorly. It is framed in a molded and blackened wooden frame; without this frame, the painting measures 28.8 x 21.9 cm.
