Louise de Kéroualle arrived in England in 1670 from France as a lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Orléans, sister of King Charles II. A few months later, after her mistress's death, she returned to England to become a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine of Braganza. After about a year in this position, encouraged by the French government, which hoped she would be a diplomatic asset, she became the mistress of Charles II. In 1672, ten months after the start of their relationship, she gave birth to their son, Charles, Duke of Richmond. In 1673, she was created Duchess of Portsmouth. She exerted some influence on national and international politics, but remained generally unpopular because of her nationality and religion.
