The painting is mounted in its molded and painted wooden frame; without the frame, the painting measures 50.3 x 65 cm.
Lucien Jonas was born in Anzin in 1880. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1899 and was awarded a second Grand Prix de Rome in 1905. He went on to become one of the most important official painters of the Third Republic, covering World War I and receiving numerous awards and government commissions. He died in 1947 in Paris.
