The celebration of winter was, within the context of Flemish landscape painting, an extremely popular and sought-after theme among the cultured patrons of the 17th century, representing a distinct artistic genre in its own right.

As confirmed by Professor Fred Meijer following his in-depth study, this is a typical painting by the Flemish artist Hans de Jode (The Hague, 1630 – Vienna, 1663) and is a true rarity among collectors, as the artist’s works are almost exclusively found in public collections and are rarely available on the market.

In this case, the scene is imbued with that inimitable fairy-tale aura that made the Flemish master’s works famous— a depiction with an enchanted, romantic atmosphere that highlights the small, imaginative details and the magical winter setting—characterized by rugged, rocky landscapes with bridges, towers, and towns along the banks—all accentuated by a very pronounced luminosity.

The color palette is limited, with cool and warm tones skillfully combined; the painting is dominated by an
almost unreal silence, in which everything is enveloped in a nearly surreal stillness, typical of his landscapes.

Born in The Hague, the artist led an eventful life, spending much of it in Italy—in Rome and Venice—and finally in Vienna, where he worked as a painter for the imperial court.

The scholar dates the work to De Jode’s Italian period, presumably around 1650–1660, when the artist was in Rome, where he came into contact with the works of Salvator Rosa, as evidenced by the influence of the latter evident in his more or less fantastical landscapes, characterized by fluid, rapid brushstrokes and a compositional scheme often featuring diagonal lines, with whimsical clusters of trees and contrasting lighting effects.

For comparison, we can illustrate below some of the artist’s works that show clear similarities to the composition under consideration, including:
