The pair of paintings on offer, works by a Neapolitan artist active between the 17th and 18th centuries, depict two biblical episodes from the life of Abraham, specifically involving the patriarch’s two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, as recounted in the Book of Genesis.
The first painting depicts the young Ishmael, Abraham’s firstborn, born of his union with the Egyptian slave Hagar, a union consented to by his wife Sarah herself in order to have an heir—since, being advanced in years, she believed she could no longer bear children—with the intention of adopting him at the time of his birth.
After the birth of his son Isaac, however, Sarah was overcome by intense jealousy toward the young slave Hagar, and Abraham was then forced to send her away along with their son Ishmael,
In the episode depicted here, we see Hagar, lost in the desert of Beersheba and desperate over the imminent death of her young son, being rescued by the Archangel Michael, who points out a spring where she can take the child to quench his thirst.
The second painting, on the other hand, tells the story of Isaac, Abraham’s second son, conceived by his wife Sarah despite her advanced age.
God subjected Abraham to an extraordinary test of obedience, and to see the strength of his faith, He commanded him to sacrifice Isaac; Abraham went without hesitation to Mount Moriah, and just as he was about to carry out the sacrifice, knife already in hand, he was stopped by the angel sent by the Lord, who seized his wrist with a firm and decisive grip, and showed him a ram to be offered as a substitute sacrifice.
