In this delightful work, depicting a classic Nativity scene, the Virgin Mary is depicted in adoration as she gently holds the sheet on which the Child lies, with a gesture of protection and pride that fosters an atmosphere of intimate contemplation, complemented by the presence of three cherubs in the upper portion.
A stylistic analysis of the canvas readily attributes its creation to a painter of the Genoese school active during the 17th century, specifically in the context of devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627–1703), a leading figure in Genoese Baroque culture.
Piola headed the city’s most important painting workshop of the time, known as “Casa Piola,” where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also worked.
While his output specialized in highly decorative, secular, and allegorical paintings intended to adorn Genoese patrician palaces, he also devoted himself to a refined series of religious works.
In particular, the style of this beautiful painting is similar to that of his son Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654–1715), who favored intimate devotional compositions and carried on a family painting tradition clearly recognizable in the style of the faces with their gentle expressions, in the rendering of the full, opaque drapery, in the tendency to flatten volumes and space, in the color palette that emphasizes the prevalence of cool tones with a dominant gray-blue hue, and in the way the peak of light coincides with the spatial center of the scene—which in this case is the Infant Jesus—who radiates light through his snow-white garments and the gray-blue shades of the Virgin’s robe.
