The charming sacred image captured in this work follows the canonical compositional structure, with the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, still swaddled as a newborn, depicted in a playful moment as the mother tickles the child’s lip to make him laugh; at their side are three chubby little angels who, like curious children, are amused by the scene.
Focused on the refinement of the poses and the vibrancy of the color palette, the sacredness of the image is softened by the spontaneous gestures of the figures, which evoke a scene from everyday life rather than a religious image. The vivid colors also emphasize the joyous occasion, although the golden background and the luminous halo emanating from the Virgin evoke the divine nature of the figures.
The stylistic elements of the painting fit within the Romanist movement that developed in Antwerp on the eve of Rubens’s return from Italy, characterized as a sort of Northern variant of mature Italian Mannerism.
The artist, who can be dated to the early 17th century although the pictorial styles still draw on earlier models, is to be found among the large group of students of the Flemish master Hendrick van Balen; in particular, we believe it can be attributed to the hand of his son and pupil Jan van Balen (Antwerp 1611–1654), as it represents a perfect example of his painting, whose body of work displays the typical characteristics of the Italianizing Flemish movement, which he in turn inherited from his father.
