In this charming painting, we see a portrait of John the Evangelist holding a quill in his hand as he writes the pages of his Gospel, while behind him we can make out the silhouette of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute.

The graceful face, which nonetheless reveals his devout demeanor—lending the painting a more intimate and delicate, yet not excessive, sense of religiosity—is one of the typical characteristics of works intended for domestic devotion, as is the case with this Saint John.
What immediately stands out in the depiction of the saint is the freshness of his features; he is, in fact, portrayed as young and handsome. It is precisely this iconographic detail that makes the work fascinating and very pleasing to the eye—it was likely commissioned for a private room.

The painting exhibits the distinctive features of 18th-century French portraiture, characterized by soft line work and a skillful use of light. The rather pronounced chiaroscuro and well-balanced shading produce an excellent effect thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the scene’s dark background.

The painting has been re-framed and is in excellent condition, with colors that remain vibrant and a paint layer in pristine condition.
The painting is sold together with an attractive gilded frame.
