Winter Landscape
oil on canvas
76 x 63 cm. - Framed: 87 x 75 cm.
The compositional and stylistic elements of this delightful snow-covered landscape allow us to attribute it to the painter Francesco Foschi (Ancona, 1710 – Rome, 1780), who became famous for his evocative winter landscapes. A native of Ancona of noble descent, the painter received his training in Rome, where he moved with his family in 1729, and later began working as an art dealer, taking up his final residence in Piazza di Spagna in 1764.
It was around the middle of the century that Foschi began to devote himself to landscape painting, specializing in views of the countryside and winter landscapes such as ours—a genre already widespread in the Low Countries since the sixteenth century but rarely practiced in Italy, except by a few Venetian artists such as Marco Ricci or Giuseppe Bison.
Foschi’s winter landscapes, in particular, often depict views of his native Apennines, enjoying great success especially among wealthy foreigners who traveled the Italian peninsula from north to south during their Grand Tour. Many of his paintings found their way to the English or French markets; the latter, in particular, proved especially favorable to his work, where he was known during his artistic maturity as “Chevalier Foschi.”
A recurring motif in Foschi’s paintings is the bare tree (or group of trees) in the foreground covered in snow, which has become almost a signature of the artist, as have the small bridge and the classic thatched-roof country cottages. As is often the case in this type of work, the artist tends to emphasize the presence of nature, depicting the figures on a smaller scale.
Our attribution is supported by a comparison with ‘A Winter Landscape with Peasants Near Farmhouses’ a painting by Francesco Foschi—whose compositional structure perfectly matches that of the proposed canvas but is in a horizontal format—and sold by Christie’s in London (Old Master Pictures, Dec. 10, 2003, lot 89, URL: https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-4221021?ldp_breadcrumb=back).
Another extremely similar composition is the painting, “Winter Landscape with River, Bridge, Rustic House, and Figures,” which was sold at Sotheby’s and is also attributed to Francesco Foschi (July 5, 1970, lot 10)
