This depiction of St. Jerome the Penitent, still in the style of the sixteenth century as evidenced by its color palette and the sculptural treatment of the figures, can be attributed to an artist from Ferrara active in the late 16th century. The saint is depicted in a half-length portrait with his typical iconographic attributes: the crucifix to which he offers adoration, the skull—a symbol of penance—in his left hand resting on a closed book, and finally the stone he holds in his right hand.

Depicted in a three-quarter view as a half-length portrait, with a beard and long hair, Saint Jerome occupies the foreground, evoking in particular the period of hardship and solitude he spent in the desert. His long, disheveled hair and downward gaze convey the sense of a religious icon that inspires devotion and invites spiritual reflection and repentance.

The stylistic characteristics of this panel would lead us to attribute its authorship to an artist from the circle of Giuseppe Mazzuoli, known as il Bastarolo (Ferrara 1536–1589), whose pictorial vocabulary is in fact rooted in the Ferrarese figurative tradition—from which the vivid, bright color scheme and intense naturalism derive—and in his knowledge of Emilian and Venetian painting.

It should be noted that the 1570s and 1580s marked the height of Mazzuoli’s fame, during which his painting showed a progressive shift toward more simplified compositions that reflected the Counter-Reformation demands of Ferrara’s changing religious climate and, consequently, the specific requirements of his patrons.

These characteristics can be observed in the work in question, which is similar to the artist’s mature works.
The work is in excellent condition. Antique frame, not contemporary.
