Attributed to / Workshop of / Circle of Carlo SARACENI, a painter active in Rome very early 17th century (born in 1579 or 1580 in Venice and died in the same city in 1640)

"The Holy Family" or "The Nativity"
The gaze of all the figures converges on Jesus.
The painter skillfully captures Mary’s maternal love and Joseph’s protective care.
The two entwined angels emerging from the upper part of the painting seem to envelop the scene, as if to protect the Holy Family. Their movement brings the scene to life and lends it a striking sense of immediacy.
In the darkness, one can still make out the discreet ox (to the left, behind Joseph) and donkey (to the right of the scene as seen by the viewer), which traditionally accompany this scene.
The attention paid to the faces of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus, as well as the treatment of light, are remarkable here.
The Nativity is the birth of Jesus of Nazareth in Bethlehem, in Judea. The date of this birth was adopted as the beginning of the Christian era in the Gregorian calendar. The Nativity is celebrated as “Christmas” on December 25 by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and Protestant churches.

Fine craquelure in the paint layer consistent with the painting’s date.
