Oil on canvas, in an antique carved and gilt wood frame of the 19th century.

The painting depicts St Mark Square seen from the corner of the Doge’s Palace, with the column surmounted by the winged lion of St Mark in the foreground and, in the background, the silhouette of the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore set against a sky crossed by large clouds. Numerous figures animate the square, recalling the typical repertoire of Guardi-style staffage. The intense palette, played out in tones of green and blue, and the synthetic rendering of the architecture place the work within the tradition of nineteenth-century Venetian vedutismo, heir to the great eighteenth-century season of Canaletto and Guardi, reproposed in smaller formats intended for the travel-souvenir market.
