Jacopo Amigoni is one of the leading figures of European Rococo, a pupil of Antonio Bellucci and a prominent name in early 18th-century Venetian painting, who worked successfully at the major courts of the continent, Bavaria, England, Spain, before settling permanently in Madrid, where he died in 1752. The Madonna with Child was one of his most characteristic sacred subjects, treated with a chromatic sensibility and painterly touch that grew increasingly refined over the course of his career.

The composition depicts the Virgin with her gaze turned toward heaven, cradling the sleeping Child in her arms. Beside her, the young Saint John — identifiable by the slender reed cross and the delicate gilded halo — contemplates the scene with hands joined in prayer. The fluid brushwork, the delicate chromatic treatment of the Virgin's almost adolescent face, the contrast between the cobalt mantle and the red dress, and the soft plastic rendering of the infant all point with certainty to the artist's mature period, datable to around the early 1740s, following his return to Venice from England.
