Complete details of the painting (link)

This charming painting depicts a young Sibyl, shown in the act of writing her prophecy, with her gaze turned upward, evoking the moment when she will receive divine revelations. According to Greek and Roman mythology, Sibyls were virgins endowed with prophetic powers inspired by a god—usually Apollo—who were capable of providing oracles and making predictions.

Against a monochrome background, presumably illuminated by candlelight, the complexion of the young woman stands out; she is simply dressed, her face framed by the classic turban-like veil, a typical attribute of these prophetic figures.

She possesses the adolescent grace of the mythical seers of antiquity, traditionally depicted in Bolognese painting—to which the painting clearly belongs in terms of style— as if the artist intended to rethink the entire iconographic framework of a pictorial subject that had become codified in Bologna based on the celebrated models devised by the school’s founder, Guido Reni.

A closer examination of the stylistic characteristics reveals the distinctive features of the Bolognese school; the canvas reveals strong stylistic and compositional affinities with works from Lorenzo Pasinelli’s workshop, to the extent that its execution can be attributed to a painter from his inner circle. The typology of the faces, in fact, recalls Pasinelli, who trained a host of talented pupils throughout his very long artistic career.

The painting, as suggested by an inscription on the back of the stretcher, may in particular be a valuable addition to the catalog of Giampietro Zanotti Cavazzoni, a leading figure in 18th-century Bolognese artistic culture and a student in Lorenzo Pasinelli’s workshop, whose influence shaped his entire body of work.

The painting is in good condition, with a beautiful gilded wooden frame.
