It is easy to identify the subjects of this fascinating pair of portraits as the rulers of France: Louis XV of Bourbon, who ascended the throne in 1715 at the age of just thirteen and was nicknamed “the Beloved,” and Maria Leszczyńska, Queen Consort of France and Navarre and daughter of King Stanisław I of Poland.
The queen is depicted in a three-quarter view, with a smiling face turned toward the viewer. She wears a wig in shades of gray with her hair gathered at the nape of her neck, a tiara on her head, and earrings. She wears a red velvet gown with a wide neckline, embroidered with gold thread, featuring rich lace sleeves, and a bodice adorned with a bib set with diamonds and pearls. Draped over her shoulders is a blue velvet cloak embroidered with the heraldic lilies of the Crown of France and lined with ermine.
The king, also depicted in a three-quarter view, wears a coat of mail over a cloak, with a blue sash across his shoulder and a white ruff around his neck. His face bears the same serene expression that illuminates his wife’s face.
It is presumed that these portraits are derived from a pair of official paintings of the sovereigns, most likely executed by Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684–1745)—prototypes traditionally dated to the year of their wedding, 1725, and of which several smaller-scale replicas are known to exist.
The monarchs’ identical features can be recognized in paintings by contemporaries, such as the works by Charles Van Loo (collections of the Palace of Versailles, Salon de Mars), Jean Marc Nattier (National Museum, Warsaw), and Alexis-Simon Belle (Trianon). We can mention another painter who devoted himself to such subjects, namely Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 – Paris 1744), whose portraiture shows striking stylistic affinities with our two subjects.
One of the most significant and sought-after portraitists of his time and a great exponent of the French school, he worked in France at the courts of Louis XIV and later Louis XV. Throughout his career, he received a large number of commissions, and the sheer volume of his work implies the existence of a well-organized workshop: it is therefore plausible to assume that these works were executed by one of his direct and trusted collaborators.
The pair of works is in good condition, with beautiful carved and gilded wooden frames, which are also in excellent condition.
