This bucolic landscape depicts a winding river crossing an undergrowth. The structured composition, the play of golden light and the delicacy of the foliage contribute to a serene and lively atmosphere. The whole testifies to a sensitive view of nature, both realistic and idealized. The work belongs to the French school of the 18th century, influenced by the Nordic tradition of naturalist landscapes. We find echoes of Flemish and Dutch masters such as Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael and Jan van Goyen, in the meticulous treatment of foliage, cloudy skies and bodies of water. The influence of François Boucher's followers, and in particular that of Jean-Baptiste Huet, is also felt through the pastoral atmosphere, the anecdotal figures and the delicate touch. The painting thus fits into a French decorative tradition, mixing Flemish heritage and Rococo elegance.
