Charles-philogène Tschaggeny - "les Vieux Marronniers Des Remparts De La Ville De Tongres"
Artist: Charles-philogène Tschaggeny (bruxelles, 1815 – 1894)
Oil on canvas depicting a lively rural landscape around the Flemish town of Tongeren in Belgium, part of the 19th-century Belgian realist and naturalist movement in the academic tradition of landscape painting. The scene is treated with a careful observation of nature, a harmonious palette and a balanced composition, characteristic of the Belgian school of this period.
The landscape, structured by broad masses of vegetation and a subtly shaded sky, is enlivened by small, discreetly integrated rural figures, lending the whole a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. The workmanship is masterful, legible and free of affectation, in keeping with the realistic aesthetic of the time.
The work is signed "C. Tschaggeny" in the lower left-hand corner and dated 1873.
It is presented in a quality antique frame, probably from the late 19th or early 20th century, with a cartel. The frame is slightly missing in the upper right-hand corner (on the back, see photo)
On the back, the following inscription:

Dimensions (unframed): 55 × 32 cm
Technique: oil on canvas

Charles-Philogène Tschaggeny (Brussels, 1815 - 1894) was a 19th-century Belgian painter specializing in landscape and rural scenes.
He came from a cultivated Brussels family: son of Frédéric-Guillaume Tschaggeny, a merchant originally from Neuchâtel who settled in Brussels in the early 19th century, and Anne Geneviève Célinie de Charvet, whose father was tutor to Prince Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine.
He was the brother of painter Edmond Tschaggeny (1818-1873), with whom he shared certain themes, while developing a distinct personal body of work.
Charles-Philogène trained with Eugène Verboeckhoven, a major figure in nineteenth-century Belgian painting, whose teaching had a lasting influence on his realistic and naturalist approach to landscape.
His work is part of the tradition of academic naturalist realism, appreciated today for its legibility, balance and decorative quality.
