Superb oil on panel signed Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881), one of the greatest Belgian animal painters of the 19th century, renowned for his exceptionally fine rendering of animals and the gentleness of his landscapes.

The work depicts a pastoral scene of great poetry: a cow lying down surrounded by sheep and lambs, in a hilly landscape under a luminous late-day sky. All of Verboeckhoven's mastery is expressed in the treatment of the coats, the anatomical accuracy and the subtle light that bathes the scene.
