Portrait, Lady in a Lace Bonnet, Mixed Media, French School, Louis-Philippe Period, circa 1830–1840, Period Frame, 19th Century

Portrait of Madame Godard. Watercolour heightened with gouache on paper, presented within an oval reserve. French School, Louis-Philippe period, circa 1830–1840.

A serious attribution lead points to the French painter and illustrator Héloïse Colin (1819–1873). The work comes from a collection containing drawings by Héloïse Colin bearing the same type of annotations on the reverse. Handwritten pencil inscription on the back: “Madame Godard, Marie’s great-great-aunt, sister of Madame Colin.”

Bust-length portrait of an elderly lady wearing a lace bonnet with lappets and muslin ruching, tied with a blue ribbon, and dressed in a blue silk gown with puffed sleeves. She is seated in a garnet-coloured armchair, with vivid blue eyes. Warm brown background. The face is finely modelled through successive glazes, treated with great psychological sensitivity and particular attention to the complexion and wrinkles of advanced age.

Preserved under glass, in its original gilt wood and stucco frame, with a reverse-profile moulding, decorated with leafy scrolls, palmettes and small flowers, and embellished with rocaille cartouches in the spandrels. Original gilding with an aged patina, never restored.

Condition: loose sheet within the frame, with foxing on the reverse. Tear with lifting of the upper sheet at an area of paper overlap, on the sitter’s right shoulder; the underlying area is painted and no material loss is observed.

Frame with some losses to the stucco and rubbing to the gilding, consistent with age.
