Joseph Milon - Autumn Landscape - Oil On Board - Signed And Dated 1916
Artist: Milon Joseph (1868 - 1947, France)
JOSEPH MILON (1868-1947)
Autumn landscape
Oil on board
27 × 18.5 cm (board) - 32 × 23.5 cm (framed)
On reverse: first signature and date (J. Milon, 1908) crossed out and replaced by J. Milon, 1916
Contemporary gilded stuccoed wood frame, circa 1910-1920, good condition
Provenance: artist's studio
With this work, Milon departs significantly from his usual register - portraits, genre scenes, Provencal interiors - to deliver a landscape study of unusual chromatic intensity. A broad expanse of red, with free, oblique strokes, cuts across the full width of the foreground; halfway up, a mass of trees in full autumnal blaze unfurls its deep reds, oranges and browns against a pearly-gray sky worked in rapid strokes. The palette - dominated by burnt earths, bright reds and ochres - and the energetic, fragmented brushstrokes evoke the Fauvist lesson as it circulated in the 1910s. For a painter whose output usually focused on the sober realism of simple people and interiors, this work marks a moment of abandonment to pure, almost dreamlike color.
The material history of the cardboard adds to its interest: the support is a reuse, and the artist himself crossed out an initial signature dated 1908 to replace it with the date 1916, attesting to a resumption or deferred completion. This double autograph testimony constitutes a rare piece of internal documentation.
Overall good condition. Slight wear on the cardboard, with no gaps.
The artist
Born in Gordes in 1868, Joseph Milon initially pursued a dual career: a doctorate in law, he became a solicitor at the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal in 1895, while simultaneously attending the city's School of Fine Arts. Around 1910, he relinquished his position to devote himself exclusively to painting, sculpture and engraving. His masters were the painter Honoré Gibert and the sculptor Henri Pontier, and he came under the influence of Alphonse Moutte, director of the Marseille School of Fine Arts.
A painter of genre scenes, portraits, landscapes and animals, he regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in Paris. His work, comprising over two thousand pieces, is represented at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
