We are pleased to present an original gouache and watercolor drawing by Rostislas Loukine, created during his time in Turkey. The work depicts a basket weaver at work, a simple yet profoundly human genre scene in which the artist aptly captures the concentration and dignity of the craft. Of Russian origin, Rostislas Loukine emigrated to Paris where he befriended Nicolas de Staël, before settling in Brussels. Naturalized Belgian in 1950, he led a life marked by hardship, which profoundly influenced his artistic approach. Loukine favored gouache, sometimes combined with watercolor, and frequently used humble materials such as newspaper, reinforcing the authentic and direct nature of his work.
