Born in Monaco in 1897, Pierre Ernest Kohl trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, then at the Académie Loup in Lausanne. He moved to Berlin in the early 1920s and began a career as an illustrator. Back in Paris, around 1925, he devoted himself fully to painting. Close to the artists of the Ecole de Paris, he became friends with Pascin, Kisling, Foujita, and Picasso. Exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon des Indépendants, and at Bernheim Jeune in 1927, the artist distinguished himself with expressive painting, a synthesis of the French and German avant-gardes. The Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou houses two works by the artist.
