Born in Belle-Île-en-Mer in 1905, Louis Ferrand arrived in Nantes in 1921 to study at the School of Fine Arts. A student of Daussy, he also attended the École Estienne and the Grande Chaumière in Paris. He lived and worked his entire life in Nantes, where he died in 1992. Throughout his life, he maintained a deep connection with his hometown, an inexhaustible source of inspiration and contemplation.

He exerted considerable influence in the region from his very first exhibition in 1928. He taught printmaking at the School of Fine Arts for many years and was an active member of the Independent Regional Group, the Friends of Art, and the Friends of the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1968, he was among the founders of the “Archipel” art group, based in Nantes. From 1949 to 1979, the Galerie Michel Columb in Nantes regularly exhibited his works. After the Galerie Michel Columb closed, the Galerie Convergence took over its management until 1991. In 1981, he published a collection of his thoughts and aphorisms: “Notes d’atelier” (Studio Notes).

In 1976, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (Nantes Museum of Fine Arts) dedicated a major retrospective to him. In 1992, the ARHA association organized a major exhibition of his works, alongside those of his friend Jorj Morin, in the halls of the Tour du Fer à Cheval (Horseshoe Tower) at the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany.

Deeply influenced by his native island, his work evokes the rhythm of the sea, the force of the wind, and the wild beauty of Breton coves. Louis Ferrand has always infused his works with a profound reflection on the demands of the artistic process. The meditations on the essence of the world, undertaken by this attentive observer of nature, gradually led him to move away from the direct representation of things, reaching, in some cases, an extreme simplification—a sign of his tireless quest for the elusive mystery of Creation.
