Camille Barthélemy "a Peaceful Spot In The Semois Valley"
Artist: Camille Barthélemy
Neo-Impressionist School. Oil on canvas, "A Peaceful Corner in the Semois Valley," signed in red lower right, BARTHELEMY. Countersigned on the left side of the stretcher. The crossbar bears an inscription reading: Barthélémy M. (Monique? one of the artist's two daughters?) 8 rue d'Aboukir, Paris 2nd arrondissement. Belgian School. 58 x 70.5 cm (sight size) (60 x 72.5 cm overall). Camille Barthélemy (1890-1961) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium. In 1928, he received the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français. He participated in several national and international exhibitions. The artist is particularly appreciated for his depictions of the Gaume and Ardennes regions, and he lived in Chiny (Belgium, Wallonia, in the province of Luxembourg), which is near the Semois Valley. The Semois is a meandering river with calm waters, giving the impression in places of several small lakes. The riverbanks are lined with magnificent rows of poplars and willows. Our painting most likely depicts the Semois's bends around Chiny. Impasto applied with a palette knife, a monochrome palette of emerald green and muted blues, and the intense shimmer of the water echoing the iridescence of the clouds—all this is proof of Camille Barthélemy's talent. Unframed. A small dent in the center at the top of the canvas, caused by an old nail (since removed). A few minor losses of paint in the sketched composition on the reverse of the canvas. Good overall condition. €2800.
