Fernand Lantoine was a painter and draughtsman from northern France. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Paul Signac, he settled in Uccle, near Brussels, and exhibited with the avant-garde groups Le Sillon and Libre Esthétique. His style evolved from pointillist neo-impressionism to a more structured and refined style, marked by his many travels.
Appointed official painter of the French Navy in 1922, Fernand Lantoine criss-crossed the globe. He sailed the Mediterranean and North Africa, and explored far-flung regions such as the Belgian Congo, the Arctic, Madagascar and Oceania. His painting thus became a sensitive testimony to the distant, exotic and disorientating world.
