Henri Ottmann was a French painter born on April 10, 1877, in Ancenis, in the Loire-Atlantique department, and who died in an accident in Vernon in 1927.

Trained notably at the Académie Julian in Paris, he began his artistic career in Belgium, where he became involved in the Brussels art scene. He exhibited for the first time at La Libre Esthétique in the early 1900s, before returning to settle in France.

Ottmann was a Post-Impressionist artist whose work included landscapes, portraits, genre scenes, still lifes, and female nudes. He was particularly interested in color and light, in a style notably influenced by Auguste Renoir. He participated in several major Parisian art shows, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries.

Among his best-known works are View of the Luxembourg Station in Brussels (1903), housed at the Musée d’Orsay, as well as Woman in Blue Stockings (1917) and Sleeping Courtesan (1920), both housed at the Centre Pompidou.

His career, abruptly cut short at the age of 50, left behind a body of work now considered representative of French painting in the first half of the 20th century.
