After studying science, Charles Jacquemot trained at the Académie Ranson under William Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier and devoted himself fully to painting from 1903. Exhibiting regularly at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, and the Salon des Tuileries, he formed the Groupe Libre in 1911 with, among others, François Desnoyer, Jean Peské, and Mathieu Verdilhan. A dynamic and unifying artist, he exhibited at the Galerie Devambez and Bernheim-Jeune, as well as abroad in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, Brussels, Dallas, and Detroit, and organized an exhibition of French art in Pittsburgh, USA, in 1922. The astonishing trajectory of a painter ripe for rediscovery, his works are now preserved in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art - Centre Pompidou, but also in Le Havre, Nantes, Tours and even Ottawa in Canada. While we know of some of the artist's landscapes, it is through still life that Charles Jacquemot fully expresses his qualities as a painter. Through meticulous brushstrokes, the canvases become the expression of a magical and delicate poetry.
"When faced with Jacquemot's still lifes, one thinks of the masters of 16th and 17th-century realism, and also of Chardin. Like these artists, Charles Jacquemot effaced himself before the humble things whose presence is so essential to our daily lives. The plate, the bowl, the fruit bowl and its fruit, the family tureen, the glazed jug—these are the objects he favors and arranges with the utmost taste and naturalness." Georges Turpin, excerpt from his biographical note, Salon d'Automne 1946.
