Raymond Bret-Koch was a multi-talented artist whose career spanned architecture, decoration, illustration, and painting. Born in Paris, he trained under prominent figures: Mallet-Stevens in architecture, André Groult in decoration, and Tolmer in advertising art. This threefold influence gave him an eclectic visual culture, blending architectural rigor, decorative flair, and graphic modernity. He quickly found his place in the press and publishing world, where he worked as an illustrator, designer, and editor-in-chief.

In this portrait, an elegantly poised woman is distinguished by an extravagant hat adorned with feathers and ribbons. The uncluttered background focuses attention on the figure, whose warm brown tones are enlivened by vibrant touches that lend the whole a theatrical character. The woman's gaze, both seductive and slightly ironic, contrasts with the comical pose of the small dog she cradles, tongue lolling out—a subtle tension between elegance and mischief.
