Born in London in 1887, Walter Lewino moved to Paris in 1913 after studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. Settling in Montparnasse, he became familiar with the art scene and befriended Roger Bissière. Drafted into the British Army, he returned to France at the end of World War I. In Paris, he exhibited in galleries and at the Salons des Indépendants, d’Automne, and des Tuileries.
His friendship with Roger Bissière led him to the Lot region, where he purchased a house in 1925. A group of artists then formed there in pursuit of modernity and plein air painting. The artist also found refuge there during World War II. This community of artists, now rediscovered, was at the heart of the exhibition *Rendez-vous dans le Lot*, presented at the Henri-Martin Museum in Cahors in 2024.
Deeply influenced by Constable, Walter LeWino adapted the British sensibility to the landscapes of Quercy and the French beaches. A painter of light, the artist captured atmospheres imbued with romanticism.
