Enrico Vegetti was born in Turin in 1863. Attracted to the arts at an early age, he trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, where he developed a dual practice as a painter and engraver. His talent quickly asserted itself and led him to participate in the major exhibitions of his time: he was present several times at the Venice Biennale from 1899, and also exhibited in Milan, Rome, Naples, London and Florence. Fleeing Fascist Italy, he settled in the village of Nernier in Haute Savoie, where he ended his life in 1951.
The self-portrait in Enrico Vegetti's work holds a very special place, as the artist never ceased to represent himself. The painter appears serious and concentrated, sculpting his face with a precise touch inherited from his practice as an engraver. The contrasts of light hollow out the cheekbones and accentuate the gaze, while the palette, dominated by muted tones, emphasizes a desire for depth rather than brightness. Often isolated against a neutral background, the figure imposes its silent and meditative presence, as if suspended in time. These self-portraits, now held in prestigious public collections such as the British Museum, are a reminder that Vegetti was able to transform the act of representing himself into a pictorial meditation, where the man and the artist merge in a quest for introspection.
