Born in 1924 in Flers, in the Orne department, Jeanne-Marie Bertaux trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before embarking on a career as a painting restorer, working notably in the Louvre’s workshops for over 25 years. At the same time, she began a career as a painter, drawn to traditional techniques.

Thus, her subjects became, on a material level, a pretext for experimenting with traditional media such as casein, egg tempera, and fresco painting. But far from being limited to mere technical considerations, her works are an expression of her desire for space, air, and light.
