After training himself through contact with young painters in the Montparnasse district, René Durey visited Italy and exhibited for the first time in 1913 at the Salon d'Automne, showing a view of Volterra and a landscape of Naples where the dominant characteristics of his work were already apparent: discreet, sensitive, and whose realism is accompanied by a clear and objective poetry.
Sick and convalescing in Saint Tropez in 1916, he formed friendly relationships with Signac and Dunoyer de Segonzac, then in Paris with Matisse and Vlaminck. Although he took advice from everyone, he imitated no one. In 1919, Felix Fénéon, who ran the Berhneim Jeune gallery, exhibited around thirty of his last works: the particular grace of René Durey's canvases was recognised by all, and from then on the painter was certain to follow his own personal path, that of a world of demanding sensitivity.
