Daughter of the philosopher and historian Etienne Gilson, Jacqueline Gilson grew up in a cultured environment. A student of Maurice Denis, she participated in the Ateliers d'Art Sacré where she collaborated with Georges Desvallières. As part of this revival of religious art between the two wars, Jacqueline Gilson turned to frescoes, and spending a time across the Atlantic, she created a large Stations of the Cross for the chapel of the Basilian Fathers in Toronto.
If Jacqueline Gilson's work is rigorous and structured, our two early works have the poetry of spontaneity. Made in 1935 and 1936, during trips to Europe and America, they depict a serene and playful universe. There is in these paintings, this something magical where sensitivity sublimates things.
