Pierre Charbonnier studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon before joining the Académie Ranson in Paris. From 1919, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon d'Automne. A set designer on Robert Bresson's films, a friend of the poets René Char, Jacques Prévert, and Francis Ponge, and also a unifying figure among Neo-Romantic painters, Pierre Charbonnier was a prominent figure in Parisian cultural life. He also exhibited at the galleries of Katia Granoff, Albert Loeb, and Henriette Gomes.
The post-war period marked a stylistic culmination; his compositions and viewpoints are remarkable. Imbued with cinematic imagery, the elusive artist Pierre Charbonnier composes his canvases with a clear affinity for photographic framing. Indeed, his compositions are deliberate and sophisticated, and his use of framing is dynamic. "Charbonnier's poetry is expressed through the subtlety of his combinations of forms, complemented by the play of reflections in water or in a windowpane, all executed with a rigor worthy of Mondrian."
