Emil Oelieden was born in 1875 in Lobberich (now the town of Nettetal) near the Dutch border, to a German father and a Dutch mother. After attending school, Emil Oelieden learned the masonry trade from 1891 to 1893, became a plasterer, and practiced his trade traveling to Holland, England, and Belgium. After periods working as a ceramist and goldsmith, he finally discovered painting at the age of 30. In 1906 he became a private pupil of Professor Eduard von Gebhardt (1838-1925).
