Serge Champin de Lyon was born in 1948. He has been painting since 1966-67 and specifies that he never studied Fine Arts.
"In 1965, accompanied by a friend, I toured France drawing with chalk in public squares. You can't imagine the success you can have. I left with a reproduction of El Greco and a box of chalk, quite skeptical, but every evening we counted nearly 100 francs in our purse, which allowed us to reach another city. On the way back, I was 17, I bought a series of tubes of paint and I started to paint. Since then, I have never stopped."
From 1974, his subjects were imagined landscapes bearing the traces of a permanent nostalgia. He then painted a series of biblical themes ("miraculous catch" etc.). The work takes the path of an "academic" surrealism. The artist stages himself in mythical themes or in "homages" paid to Van Gogh.
Serge Champin of Lyon also excels in the art of portraiture. He is the author of the color-illustrated book "Beyond the Portrait," which brings together 150 works.
Since 2009, the artist has been painting sunflowers. His interest in the flower was born by chance. It was upon discovering a giant, two-and-a-half-meter sunflower that his fascination took shape. He has painted more than 600 "Sunflower" paintings to date, expressing the endless cycles of life, from sunrise to sunset.
