Max Band, "port Of Dieppe" Circa 1920 - School Of Paris, Expressionism

Superb depiction of the port of Dieppe, and for those familiar with the "Ecole de Paris", the name given to the movement of Jewish artists who arrived in France from Eastern Europe at the dawn of the 20th century, the hand that produced this work is unmistakable: it's the painter Max Band.
The composition reveals all the painter's intimate atmosphere, with its soft lines and warm color tones, on a subject that can be found in many of his works (see photo)

Max Band was a painter born on August 21, 1901 in Kudirkos Naumiestis, Lithuania, who died in New York on November 8, 1974.
After a difficult childhood, since by the age of five he had lost his parents, in 1920 he moved to Germany for three years to study painting at a free academy.
In 1923 Max Band arrived in Paris.
He exhibited in New York for the first time in 1926 at the J.B Newmann gallery.
From 1923 onwards, he had solo exhibitions between Paris-Berlin and New-York in the USA, where he settled permanently in 1940.

Max Band was the doyen of a line, in the United States, of influential personalities in the art of music and film:
He is the father of fantasy film director and producer Albert Band, the grandfather of horror film director and producer Charles Band, also of film score composer Richard Band, and the great-grandfather of composer-singer Alex Band.
